Avandia Warning Label Alerts Diabetics of Possible Risk of Heart Attack

GlaxoSmithKline has placed a new warning label on bottles of Avandia, a commonly used drug by diabetics, which informs the user that the drug may or may not increase the risk of heart attacks.

The Food and Drug Administration had said that studies failed to prove conclusively that Avandia posed a great risk of heart attacks compared to other medications used to treat Type 2 diabetes.

Despite the inconclusive evidence, the FDA opted to place the warning in a black box on the Avandia label.

Avandia is widely used among Type 2 diabetics as it helps control blood sugar by countering the body’s resistance to insulin.
