Singer Chynna Phillips announced this week that she has entered rehab for anxiety issues, but the former Wilson Phillips singer’s admission has some scratching their heads.
Usually when we hear about a celeb entering treatment, it has to do with drugs or alcohol, but what many may not know is that mental issues often play a role in addiction. From depression to anxiety to bi-polar disorder or post-traumatic stress, they can all affect an addicted person’s long-term recovery or why they began using in the first place. Experts say that as many as 80 percent of those dealing with addiction have some sort of dual disorder (a mental issue along with an addiction).
Dual Diagnosis
The term “dual diagnosis” didn’t come into use until the 1980s, and it’s been an ongoing struggle since to get treatment professionals and the public to understand that we can’t just treat a chemical addiction and think the job is done. Getting the substances out of a person’s system is only the first step. We also need to treat the underlying issues that may have exacerbated or led to the addiction in the first place.
Phillips, 42, may be responding to the stress of half-sister Mackenzie Phillips’ recent admission that she had an ongoing sexual relationship with their father, singer John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas. Chynna has been publically supportive of Mackenzie, who was undergoing treatment for drug addiction at the time she began talking about the sexual abuse that she says began in her late teens.
In addition to Mackenzie’s very long and public battle with addiction, their father also struggled with addiction, a family history that makes Chynna more susceptible to addiction issues. This makes it even more important for her to be on top of any issues as soon as they arise.
