Three earthquakes rock Chile

Three large earthquakes rocked northern Chile Thursday in the span of 13 minutes. All three quakes are considered aftershocks of the earthquake that hit the Antofagasta area yesterday. Wednesday’s quake was a 7.7 magnitude and today’s first measured at 6.2 with the second at 6.8 and third 5.6.

Yesterday’s earthquake left at least two people dead and dozens injured. Thousands of people in the Santiago and Tocopilla area were left homeless as their houses collapsed or were crushed.

“There are more than, 1,200 houses, at least, that were totally flattened and others in bad shape,” said Luis Moyano, mayor of Tocopilla. “There are a great number of houses that are uninhabitable.”

He added that places that would have been used for shelters are also damaged. Chilean government officials were sending 500 temporary housing units to the city. According to a doctor 80 percent of the hospital is damaged to the point the facility is useless. The government is also sending a military hospital to the area.

Landslides are also affecting the area and have caused several roads to be blocked.
