Tropical Cyclone Sidr battered the coast of Bangledesh today and the eye of the powerful storm is expected to make landfall later Thursday near the capital, Dhaka. Winds reaching 149 mph hit the coast along with surging waves and heavy rains forcing villagers to be evacuated from their homes.
Nearly 3.2 million people are expected to be evacuated and placed in shelters. “We have taken all precautions,” said government official Ali Imam Majumder. He added nearly 620,000 people have already been placed in official shelters.
