Mark Dean Schwab, the man who kidnapped, raped and then killed 11-year-old Junny Rios Martinez in 1991, had his execution halted by the U.S. Supreme Court just hours before he was scheduled to die on Thursday.
Schwab was challenging Florida’s use of the controversial three-drug combination used in their lethal injection. The stay was expected due to the Supreme Court’s current consideration on the appeals of two Kentucky inmates who are challenging their death sentence from the same method.
Until the Supreme Court rules on the Kentucky case Scwab’s execution will remain on hold.
