Mark Dean Schwab execution halted by Supreme Court

The execution of child killer Mark Dean Schwab was halted today by the Supreme Court as they consider the use of lethal injection. The toxic three-drug combination is under questioning as some claim it is cruel and unusual punishment after the death of inmates like Angel Diaz.

Angel Diaz was executed last December 13 and it took him 15 minutes to die which is twice the amount of time it usually takes. Many argue the method of execution is cruel and unusual punishment because the inmate could be in excruciating pain and not be able to call out.

Mark Schwab would be the first person executed in Florida since Diaz. Schwab was sentenced to death for the 1991 kidnapping, rape and killing of 11-year-old Junny Rios Martinez.

Schwab saw Junny’s picture in a newspaper after the little boy won a kite flying contest. He acted as a reporter to gain the families confidence and eventually kidnapped Junny. After kidnapping him, he used duct tape to bind his hands and mouth and cut off the child’s cloths before raping him. Schwab strangled Junny and left his body in a footlocker in Brevard County.
