A Somali Islamist leader for the militant group al-Shabab has been assassinated, shot as he left a mosque in an area controlled by forces loyal to the group.
According to reports at least three masked gunmen were able to get within close range of Sheikh Daud Ali Hasan and fired several rounds at the commander, killing him instantly.
While al-Shabab is the main force fighting UN-backed troops in Somalia there are a number of insurgent groups within the country and it is believed one of them, Hizbul-Islam, was responsible for the assassination of Sheikh Hasan in the city of Kismayo.
Sheikh Hasan had been in charge of front line operations in the town of Dhobley and just hours after his murder Hizbul-Islam fighters launched an attack in the town and claimed to have killed a number of al-Shabab militants.
The two militant groups have been at odds since al-Shabab took control of Dhobley from Hizbul-Islam last year.
