United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon became the latest international figure to criticize Israel’s continued construction of settlement houses in occupied territory, calling the action illegal and demanding it stop.
Ban Ki-moon’s call comes as Israel moves forward with plans to build 1,600 new homes in East Jerusalem, an area considered by the international community as occupied territory and as such building in the region is illegal.
The UN leader is currently in the Middle East in an effort to bring Palestinians and Israelis back to the peace table but Palestinians have already said they would not take part in talks as long as Israel continued construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Palestinians have envisioned East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state but Israel has refused to acknowledge such plans.
Ban Ki-moon addressed the matter with harsh words for Israel saying, “The world has condemned Israel's expansion plans in East Jerusalem.” He continued, “Let us be clear: all settlement activity is illegal anywhere in occupied territory, and this must stop.”
