Officials have found it difficult to place an accurate number on the death toll caused by Tropical Cyclone Sidr, but conservative figures have estimated that at least 1,100 people have died along the low lying areas of Bangladesh due to the storm.
Local officials in Bangladesh have said that nearly 70 percent of the homes in Patuakhali, Barguna and Jhalakathi have been destroyed as a result of the storm that produced sea surge’s of 15-feet and winds that topped 145 miles an hour.
Many of the hardest hit areas in Bangladesh remain cut off from help and further flooding is expected as the storm continues its path towards higher ground. By dumping more rain in the mountainous region along the India border, rivers are predicted to swell and produce potentially deadly floods for the low lying areas.
As Sidr moved its way through the Bay of Bengal and hit the coastal towns of Bangladesh several residents who did not evacuate the area were swept away by the storm.
