Beloved Cincinnati Reds broadcaster and Major League Baseball’s youngest player ever Joe Nuxhall, died on Thursday night at the age of 79.
Playing for the Reds, Nuxhall made his first appearance in a major league uniform in 1944 when he was just 15 years-old, a result of several baseball rosters depletion during World War II. The lefthander came on in the ninth inning of a game against the St. Louis Cardinals and quickly got two outs but couldn’t retire the final batter.
It would be another eight years before Nuxhall pitched in a major league game, but when he returned it was for good. Over a 16-year career Nuxhall won 135 games and was named to the National League All-Star team twice.
Nuxhall retired after the 1966 season and became a broadcaster for the Reds.
Health problems had slowed the “Ol lefthander” down over the past few years. Nuxhall had been battling cancer. On November 12 he was admitted to Mercy Hospital Fairfield and underwent treatment for pneumonia. Late last night Nuxhall past away.
