Bangladesh cyclone leaves hundreds dead

Cyclone Sidr left at least 600 people dead after ripping through the coast and making it’s way above the capital, Dhaka. Hundreds of thousands of people were forced from their homes and placed in official cyclone shelters in preparation for the storm while others were left behind.

The storm has caused a national black out and uprooted trees have blocked roads causing the extent of damage to be unknown. Many more causalities are expected.

Rescue and government officials are struggling to distribute supplies to the devastated areas. More than 40,000 health workers, policemen and soldiers have been distributed to the damaged areas and the World Food Program is sending rations for 400,000 people.

Thousands of homes are expected to be damaged as well as the crop harvest. Rivers have also been flooded after the cyclone caused 16 foot tidal waves to hit cities on the coast. Rivers flowing into the Bay of Bengal are rising.
