Volcanic Eruption in Iceland Causes Flight Cancellations, Shuts Down Roads

A volcano that had remained dormant for nearly 200 years has erupted in Iceland causing authorities to halt flights and shut down roads while evacuating several hundred residents.

The eruption near Eyjafjallajoekull glacier, about 75 miles east of Reykjavik, occurred just after midnight and led to a state of emergency being put in place for southern Iceland.

Fortunately the area where volcano was located is sparsely populated and authorities estimated about 500 to 600 people were evacuated.

While the eruption did not cause any major damage there is fear that it could trigger an eruption at the Katla volcano, a much more violent volcano located nearby.
