Iran’s Supreme Leader Accuses U.S. of Plotting Against Country

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused the United States of plotting against the country, saying the U.S. government has used talk of peace and friendship to mask their true intentions of promoting sedition.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued the warning to Iranians during a televised address marking Iran’s New Year, stating that while the United States offered words of peace their policies stood in obvious contradiction.

The address came one day after President Barack Obama sent a video message to Iranians in which he reaffirmed his pledge to peaceful dialogue and while the supreme leader did not mention Obama’s message he did state “"Eight months after the elections they took the worst possible stance. The president called those rioters and saboteurs 'civil rights activists’.”

Since that election there has been a clear divide between the Iranian government and those Iranians who object to the current system. That divide has led to numerous protests and demonstrations, those protests have often been met by violent clashes with government forces.
