Democrats are confident they have the 216 votes necessary to pass the controversial health care reform legislation in the House of Representatives despite Republican optimism that the bill will fall short of the required votes.
President Barack Obama, along with senior Democrats supporting the measure, have been pushing the healthcare reform legislation for the past several days to gain support for Sunday’s debate. That push, according to Democratic House Caucus leader John Larson, has resulted in persuading enough lawmakers who had been on the fence prior to Sunday.
The new healthcare reform proposals would give health coverage to an additional 32 million Americans currently living without yet Republicans have said the legislation is full of flaws and the country cannot afford the measure.
Obama has criticized Republicans who have tried to detract the legislation, saying not only could the country afford health care reform but more significantly the country can’t afford not to have health care reform.
While Obama has tried to cross the party line and gain support from Republicans it has become obvious that his only support will come from his Democratic party. That was made obvious by Eric Cantor, the second-ranking Republican in the House, who told ABC “The American people don't want this to pass. The Republicans don't want this to pass. There will be no Republican votes for this bill.”
The House will be voting on three items concerning the Senate version of a health reform bill, changes that would be made to that bill and on the rules that will govern the debate. If Democrats are able to pass all three votes then President Barack Obama would be able to sign the measure into law.
