The Minnesota Twins were dealt a serious blow to their hopes of an AL Central title on Sunday when their closer Joe Nathan was shelved for the 2010 season due to his injured right elbow.
Nathan, one of the top closers in baseball, was seen as a key element in the Twins run toward a division crown but with surgery ahead Minnesota will have to find a replacement for the 35-yeear-old. That won’t be easy as Nathan went 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA and 47 saves last year.
The decision was made after Nathan threw for about ten minutes on Sunday after which he said “We knew it was a long shot, but I think this will clear my head. There definitely was no gray area. It was definitely on the dark side. We know now that we're going to need to go in and have some surgery done and get this thing taken care of.”
