Cyclone Sidr Death Toll Could Hit 10,000

With conservative numbers estimating the death toll in last week’s Tropical Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh at 2,000, members of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society fear that number will rise to more than 10,000.

The Category 4 cyclone has left thousands missing after hitting the southwest coast on Thursday. Many of those missing are feared to be swept out to sea, as many areas had up to 80 percent of their homes destroyed by winds that topped 150 mph while a sea surge of up to 15 feet.

Several areas in the low-lying country remain cut-off from relief as downed trees and flooded roads have made it nearly impossible to reach those needing help.
