Fran Townsend Resigns as Homeland Security Adviser

In a statement released early Monday morning, President George Bush acknowledged that leading Homeland Security adviser Fran Townsend has stepped down from her post, noting that Townsend “has ably guided the Homeland Security Council. She has played an integral role in the formation of the key strategies and policies my administration has used to combat terror and protect Americans.”

Townsend had served as adviser to the council for 4 ½ years.  Prior to her arrival as a Bush aide, Townsend had served as an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, N.Y. as well as an assistant U.S. attorney in Manhattan.

The 45-year-old Townsend gave no reason for her decision to step down and Bush made no announcement of a successor.
