Despite leaving town for their two-week Thanksgiving holiday; the Senate will remain in session as Democratic lawmakers work to ensure President Bush doesn’t make any appointments during the recess.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that the Senate would hold “pro forma sessions” during the break as a method of blocking Bush from using his presidential power to fill vacancies without gaining Senate confirmation. As part of the Constitution, the president has the authority to fill those vacancies while the Senate is in recess.
Democratic lawmakers have grown frustrated with Bush’s refusal to confirm their nominated candidates in several key positions. The move by Reid to keep the Senate in “pro forma” will guarantee that Bush doesn’t fill them during the two-week layoff.
Reid has said that he would be willing to approve certain Bush backed candidates if the president was willing to confirm a few Democratic nominees but according to the senator that hasn’t happened. Reid recently stated, “I indicated I would be willing to confirm various appointments if the administration would agree to move on Democratic appointments. They would not make that commitment. As a result, I am keeping the Senate in pro forma to prevent recess appointments until we get this process on track.”
