Sunday’s explosion at the Zasyadko mine in eastern Ukraine has left at least 70 miners dead and rescuers scrambling to reach up to 28 workers still trapped deep inside.
Those rescue relief efforts are being hampered by fires that continue to burn inside the mine, cutting access to areas where they believe those trapped may be.
Many have called into question the lack of safety precautions taken by Ukraine’s coal industry leaders. The blast occurred at a depth of 3,300 feet, much deeper than most coal mines in Europe. At that depth methane levels are much higher and without proper ventilation the potential for an explosion is dangerously high.
