Obama Health Care Bill Passes
Controversial Reform Bill Passed by House
On Sunday, the House approved the health care reform bill that was passed by the Senate on Christmas Eve of last year. The House Democrats managed to pass the bill with a vote of 219-212 despite a unanimous Republican opposition and 34 Democratic No's. The historic legislation, which has been the subject of a controversial national debate for months, will provide coverage to 32 million uninsured people and add 16 million people to the Medicaid rolls. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the effects of the reform will cost the government $938 billion over 10 years but should reduce federal budget deficits by $143 billion in that same amount of time. The final votes for the bill were preceded by a general House debate in which Representatives from both parties did what they could to reiterate their sentiments and perhaps convince the undecided Democratic voters. Some Democratic Representatives, including Bart Stupak, were reluctant to approve the bill until President Obama promised that he would issue an executive order to ensure that public funding would not be used for abortion services. In the end, the Democratic majority managed to pass this bill, which will surely continue to be the subject of scrutiny and debate for years to come.
After the historic Democratic victory, President Barack Obama said that "This is what change looks like." Indeed, Obama's campaign was founded on the notion of change in Washington, and this bill seems to be the latest step towards that promised change.
