First Tiger Woods Interview Since Crash
Golf Champ Answers Several Questions
On Sunday, Tiger Woods answered interview questions for the first time since a November car crash turned his life upside down. In interviews for ESPN and the Golf Channel, Woods responded to a number of personal questions, although he sometimes declined to answer, stating that the questioned issues were personal in nature. An ESPN interviewer asked, with an explicit sense of respect, why Woods married his wife, to which he promptly replied "because I loved her." He went on to say about his wife Elin and his mom that "Those are the two people in my life who I'm closest to and to say the things that I've done, truthfully to them [was] very painful." During the ESPN interview, Woods confessed to "living a life of a lie", in admitted recognition that the public perceived him to be something that he simply was not. And perhaps Tiger didn't even perceive himself exactly as he was; he said that by "stripping away denial and rationalization you start coming to the truth of who you really are and that can be very ugly." When asked about the infamous car crash that took place outside his home, Woods responded that "It's all in the police report" and said that the specific cause of the accident is a private matter. The ESPN interview, which was limited to a duration of 5 minutes, had no restrictions on questions and is scheduled to air on TV starting at 7:30 PM Eastern Time. CBS refused to interview Woods because of the requested time restriction.
Tiger Woods has always been a media attraction. He is golf's highest-paid competitor and the biggest attraction for most golf events. In 2008, Woods earned $110 million from competition winnings and corporate endorsements. Why is he so popular? It's probably because he has broken numerous golf records, is ranked number 1 in the world, and has won 14 Major golf championships.
