Cult Leader to Try and Free Four Children Holed Up in Cave in Southern Russia

Pyotr Kuznetsov, the self-professed prophet and leader of the “True Russian Orthodox Church,” is preparing to visit the site where several of his followers have holed themselves up in a cave, threatening to commit mass suicide if police intervene.

The 29 members of the doomsday cult excavated the cave themselves after hearing Kuznetsov declare the world would end in May. Kuznetsov encouraged the members to take shelter in the cave and await the day.

It has been more than a month since those members retreated into the cave located in the Penza region in southern Russia. They have told police if they try to force them out they will ignite gas canisters.

Kuznetsov, who has been staying in a psychiatric hospital, will be taken to the site on Wednesday in attempts to convince his followers to free the four children that are in the cave.

Many inside the cave no longer trust Kuznetsov, believing he is now working for the Russian government. It is believed the group has enough food to last until spring.
