U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Travels to Mexico to Discuss War on Drugs

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is traveling to Mexico to engage in talks with the country about their shared war on drugs.

Clinton will be heading a U.S. delegation that includes Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The delegation is set to discuss the recent Merida initiative, a $1.6 billion program designed to fight the powerful drug cartels in Mexico.

While the meetings have been planned for some time they have taken on new significance since the murders of three people connected to the U.S. consulate in the border city of Ciudad Juarez.

Mexico has said the U.S. needs to step up their efforts in the fight as many of the guns used by the drug cartels are bought north of the border and the demand for their drugs remains high in the U.S., further fueling the violence in Mexico.
