Despite calls from the international community to end construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted his country’s right to build, declaring “Jerusalem is not a settlement, it's our capital.”
Netanyahu was addressing calls to halt the construction of 1,600 new homes in East Jerusalem, construction that threatens to end any hopes of peace talks with Palestinians.
The Israeli PM was addressing the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC in Washington on Monday evening when he said there was a connection between Jerusalem and the Jewish people that could not be denied.
Netanyahu told a cheering crowd “the Jewish people were building Jerusalem 3,000 years ago and the Jewish people are building it today.”
Prior to Netanyahu’s address U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told those in attendance that the continued construction in occupied territory was a deterrent to peace and undermined the U.S. role in the process of bringing the two sides together.
