Jay-Z releases the a cappella version of his recent LP, American Gangster, on Dec. 4, on his birthday. The rapper will turn 38.
American Gangster, the concept album inspired by the film starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, topped the Billboard charts in its opening week with 459,000 records sold, tying him with Elvis for second-most #1 albums in history (10). Only The Beatles have more (19).
The Roc-A-Fella Records CEO spawned a phenomenon in 2004 when his so-called retirement album, The Black Album, began to be remixed by a multitude of DJs.
The first successful one to do this was DJ Danger Mouse, one-half of group Gnarls Barkley, who remixed Jay-Z's vocals with the music from The Beatles' The White Album, creating The Grey Album.
