U.S. President Barack Obama will be meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday afternoon, just hours after signing into law an historic healthcare bill.
Obama’s scheduled talks with Netanyahu will almost certainly concentrate on Israel’s recent announcement that they would continue construction in East Jerusalem, a decision that has left peace talks with Palestinians in serious doubt.
Netanyahu has reaffirmed Israel’s right to build in Jerusalem, saying the city was not a settlement but the country’s capital and with that their rights to construction were not debatable.
The decision to build an additional 1,600 homes in Ramat Shlomo has undermined the peace process according to top ranking U.S. officials but Israel has ignored calls to stop the construction.
Those calls could continue on Tuesday when Obama meets with Netanyahu but the Israeli leader isn’t likely to bend on the issue. According to Netanyahu the construction “in no way precludes the possibility of a two-state solution” and has insisted Israel remains committed to a lasting peace with Palestinians.
