Nigeria’s Acting President Goodluck Jonathan Selects New Cabinet

Nigeria’s acting President Goodluck Jonathan has selected a new cabinet for his leadership, one week after removing the cabinet members of elected President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Jonathan has reportedly sent the names of his nominees to the Senate for consideration but details of that list have not been clear. In some reports the list included just the names of ministers from the previous administration he wanted to retain while other reports have suggested Jonathan sent a complete list of nominees to the Senate.

In February Jonathan assumed the duties as acting president after it was determined the ailing Yar’Adua would not be able to fulfill his obligations as head of state. Yar’Adua received medical treatment in Saudi Arabia last November and though he recently returned to Nigeria he has yet to be seen in public.
