With expectations that the Pakistan Supreme Court will clear the way for President Pervez Musharraf to assume another five-year term, the embattled general could appease his criticizers as early as Saturday by quitting as chief of the Pakistani army.
If the Supreme Court recognizes that the disputed presidential elections of October were legal then Musharraf must only await confirmation from the Election Commission before he can be sworn in as president. That could happen by Thursday and when Musharraf is sworn in for an additional term he would likely step down from his post in the army.
Musharraf has faced international criticism for his decision to suspend his country’s constitution earlier this month and placing the country in a state of emergency. During this period thousands of those opposed to Musharraf have been arrested.
