Marijuana Epidemic in the NFL?

Many Rookies Have History of Drug-Use

Various NFL personnel evaluators have told SI.com that an increasing number of incoming NFL rookies have a history of drug use, especially with the use of marijuana. All of the interviewed personnel execs requested to remain anonymous because of the nature of the topic. One NFL head coach has allegedly estimated that one third of his club's draft prospects have a history of marijuana use. Various other sources seem to believe that approximately 10 draft prospects have been red-flagged for marijuana use during college. According to one source, "Marijuana use is almost epidemic, with more guys having tested positive for marijuana at some point in their college background than I can ever remember." In other words, so many NFL prospects now have a recorded history of marijuana use that the past drug use alone is no longer a determining factor - the personnel men simply have to work with what they have. One head coach recalls that, in the past, if a player had failed a college drug test for marijuana, he would simply be erased from consideration. But now, as a source claims, "There're enough instances of it that it's hard to know how to set your board. You can't throw out that many guys. You have to go case-by-case and do your homework on them.''

So is there a marijuana epidemic in the NFL? Maybe. Maybe not. It may just be the case that drug use is now being detected more than before. But there is also the fact that marijuana has already become legalized in some parts of the country for medicinal purpose, so perhaps the use of marijuana is becoming more socially acceptable than it was, say, 20 years ago. We may be on the verge of a marijuana epidemic in the NFL and in professional sports at large, but only time will tell how exactly that drug use might affect the leagues, the players, and the fans.
