Nova Scotia orders review of tasers after death of a man

Nova Scotia has ordered the review of taser guns after the death of a 45-year-old man in police custody. The man, whose name has not been released, died after being tasered in a violent confrontation with Halifax police officers at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional facility.

The Canadian province’s Justice Minister, Cecil Clarke, ordered the review. The incident happened when the man was being fingerprinted and tried to escape by jumping over a counter and running for the door.

Deputy Chief Tony Burbridge said the man was tasered “once or twice” by an officer. The man then went into “medical distress” and was taken to a hospital were he was cleared of any medical issues. He died the next day in his jail cell.

“It’s premature, and I want to stress premature, to draw any conclusion that the taser contributed to this man’s death,” said Burbridge.
