One of French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s fiercest rivals, Dominique de Villepin, could be positioning himself for a run at France’s top office after launching a new party aimed at challenging what he called “politics practiced today.”
While not giving a name to the party or formally announcing plans to run for president de Villepin did say he has “decided to create a political movement, a free and independent movement, open to everyone, which is above divisions and can unite all good intentions.”
De Villepin expressed frustration with the current state of France, declaring “We cannot accept to live in a country where inequality and injustice reach such a level. We cannot delay our response.”
The former prime minister had at one time been friends with Sarkozy as the two served under then President Jacques Chirac but the two developed an intense rivalry and when Sarkozy was chosen to succeed Chirac as the UMP’s candidate for president that relationship all but ended.
According to reports the new party will officially be launched on June 19 at which time de Villepin could make his presidential aspirations known.
