15-year-old girl inmate raped and tortured in Brazilian jail

The Brazilian government is investigating the rape and torture of a 15-year-old girl who was thrown in a jail cell with 20 male inmates. The girl says she was forced to have sex with several inmates in order to get food. She says she was burned and abused in other ways while at the jail.

The girl, who is now in a witness protection program, was arrested for attempted theft in Abaetetuba, Brazil and held in jail for three weeks. Two social workers attempted to visit the girl in jail but were turned away by police officers. The girl said she also asked to speak to her family members, but police ignored her.

The case has sparked world wide attention to several other cases of women being put in men’s prisons. “What we are seeing is an epidemic,” said Tim Cahill of Amnesty International.

“There is a total collapse in the jail system in Brazil, but this is no excuse for them to wash their hands and do nothing,” said Governor chief of staff Claudio Puty. “We are doing all we can to punish these policemen.”
