Nawaz Sharif Returns to Pakistan, Eyes Upcoming Elections

After more than seven years in exile, former Pakistan president Nawaz Sharif returned to his homeland on Sunday with plans to participate in the country’s scheduled presidential elections to be held in January.

Sharif has insisted that he has not come to an agreement with the current president Pervez Musharraf, rather he continues to attack the legitimacy of Pakistan’s government, telling CNN, “He is not a legitimate president of the country; I do not accept that, not at all.”

It was Musharaff who led a coup in 1999 that unseated Sharif.

Sharif leads the Pakistan Muslim League party and has been adamant about the fact that he would not be interested in any power-sharing agreement with Musharraf.
