Julia Carson, Indiana Congresswoman, Announces She has Terminal Cancer

Julia Carson, the Democratic congresswoman from Indiana’s 7th District, revealed to her state’s newspaper that she has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

 

In a statement issued to the Indianapolis Star, Carson wrote “My doctor discovered lung cancer. It had gone into remission years before, but it was back with a terminal vengeance.”

 

Carson, the first African-American to represent Indianapolis, has served her district since 1997. The 69-year-old Carson played an instrumental role in ensuring Rosa Parks was bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal and has been a leading advocate in welfare reform.
