Julia Carson, Indiana Congresswoman, Announces She has Terminal Cancer

Julia Carson, the Democratic congresswoman from Indiana’s 7^th District, revealed to her state’s newspaper that she has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

In a statement issued to the Indianapolis Star, Carson wrote “My doctor discovered lung cancer. It had gone into remission years before, but it was back with a terminal vengeance.”

Carson, the first African-American to represent Indianapolis, has served her district since 1997. The 69-year-old Carson played an instrumental role in ensuring Rosa Parks was bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal and has been a leading advocate in welfare reform.
