For the Northern Iowa Panthers and St. Mary's Gaels Thursday night’s results will hopefully be no indicator as to how the underdog will fare as the NCAA Tournament continues. The dance ended for #12 Cornell and #11 Washington as they came across much deeper talent in the form of Kentucky and West Virginia and the Panthers and Gaels will need to upset the more traditional basketball powers of Michigan State and Baylor if their March Madness is to continue.
St. Mary’s will be facing perhaps the most athletic team still standing in the #3 Baylor Bears but with upset wins over Richmond and Villanova the Gaels have hardly backed down from a challenge. They could pose some problems for a Baylor Bears team that really hasn’t been tested in their opening two games and if St. Mary’s is able to keep their inside-outside game going they could find their way into the Elite Eight.
In perhaps the most interesting matchup of the night the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes will be taking on the #6 Tennessee Volunteers for the right to keep dancing. Both schools have a ton of talent and have plenty of star power but ultimately it will come down to how well the Volunteers can contain Evan Turner, not only in his scoring but in his ability to find open teammates.
The winner of the Ohio State-Tennessee matchup will face the winner of the #9 Northern Iowa Panthers and #5 Michigan State Spartans showdown. Northern Iowa has claimed the title as dragon slayer after knocking off the #1 Kansas Jayhawks and with the Spartans facing injury problems they could find themselves one step away from Indianapolis.
Flying under the radar for many the #1 Duke Blue Devils are in great position to advance to the Elite Eight as they take on a #4 Purdue Boilermakers team that has ignored the skeptics and just won. Both Duke and Purdue were seen as potential early exit candidates but they have managed to keep pace with the rest of the field and one of them will be facing the winner of the Baylor-St. Mary’s game for the right to play in the Final Four.
