Twin Bomb Blasts in Iraq Kill at least 20 as Country Awaits Parliamentary Election Results

Twin bomb blasts in the Iraqi town of Khalis have killed at least 20 people and left several more injured just ahead of a scheduled announcement revealing results of the recent parliamentary elections.

News that election officials had planned to announce those results sparked fears of violence and those fears turned to reality in the Iraqi province of Diyala as a popular restaurant was targeted in the bombings. Officials have said women and children were among the dead.

The parliamentary elections have been the highly contested as Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has found himself trailing former prime minister Iyad Allawi by about 11,000 votes with 95% of the vote counted.

Maliki supporters have already demanded a manual recount of votes but those calls were put to rest on Thursday when the election commission ruled that out.
