FIU Player Stabbed; Dies on Way to Hospital

Late Thursday night, 22-year-old FIU running back Kendall Berry was fatally stabbed on the FIU campus before he died on the way to the hospital. According to the Miami-Dade Police, Berry was arguing with a man outside of the student recreation center before he was stabbed. The culprit has yet to be captured or identified, but several witnesses have already been interviewed. On Friday morning, the president of FIU, Mark Rosenberg, issued a statement, in which he said, "Last night, we lost a well-liked student who was a tireless worker in the classroom and on the ball field... Like so many of our students, Kendall Berry had positive energy and a bright future." Unfortunately, that life is now lost, and we will never know what levels of happiness and success Kendall Berry could have achieved.

Since the tragic stabbing took place, the school has been placed under an increased level of security. The school was open on Friday, as usual, and grief counseling was available for those who would like to receive it. The FIU campus may be a sad and perhaps scary environment for some time, but the FIU police department is undoubtedly on high alert. Further, Rosenberg assures members of the FIU community that "Our campus is safe." He also asserts that "We will not rest until the perpetrator of this crime is brought to justice."

Kendall Berry was a junior at FIU. He had seven brothers and sisters and was a well-liked student and athlete. In 2007, he ran 164 all-purpose yards as a freshman. FIU football coach Mario Cristobal said "When you put the football in his hands, that kid can do some unbelievable things." Because he was a great athlete, a popular student, and a member of a large family, Kendall Berry will surely be missed.
