Former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi Gains Key Victory as Bloc Earns Most Seats in Parliamentary Elections

Former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi has earned a major victory over current Prime Minister Nouri Maliki after officials announced his bloc had picked up the most seats in the country’s recent parliamentary elections.

Allawi’s coalition held a narrow two-seat advantage over Maliki in the results and it will now be his duty to form a coalition government, something many fear will spark further violence in the country.

Just hours before the election results were announced a pair of bomb explosions in the town of Khalis killed at least 40 people and injured several more. Episodes of violence are expected to continue as the process toward forming that new government grows closer.

While Allawi has been credited with the victory by the election commission Maliki has yet to concede the outcome of the vote and has said his bloc would continue to move forward with plans to form the new government.
