Gilbert Arenas Sentenced; Avoids Prison

NBA Star's Sentence Too Light?

On Friday, NBA star and Washington Wizards member Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to perform 30 days of service in a halfway house. He must also register as a gun offender. Arenas was charged with felony gun possession on January 14. The next day, he pleaded guilty in court to a charge of carrying a pistol in D.C. without a license, and his sentencing was scheduled for March 26. The event that caused all these legal troubles occurred on December 21, 2009, when Arenas brought guns to a locker room and placed them next to his teammate Javaris Crittenton's locker. Next to the guns, he placed a sign that read "Pick 1." Crittenton reacted by drawing his own gun. The event resulted in indefinite suspensions for both players. Arenas says that it was all part of joke that stems back to a December 19 card game argument between the two players, but Crittenton said that he only drew his gun because he feared for his life. On January 25, Crittenton plead guilty to a misdemeanor gun possession charge and was sentenced to one year of probation. During Arena's legal battle, prosecutors claimed that he had attempted to pressure Crittenton to cover-up the whole ordeal. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Kavanaugh recommended that Arenas receive three months in jail, three years of probation, and a mandate to perform 300 hours of community service. Instead, Arenas has been sentenced to two years of probation, which includes a month in a halfway house. He must also register as a gun offender and donate $5,000 to a victims of violent crimes fund.
