On Monday former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif registered to run in the parliamentary elections scheduled for January 8.
Sharif remains uncertain if he will stay in the race, having already stipulated that the elections must be held after President Pervez Musharraf lifts the country’s state of emergency.
Having spent nearly eight years in exile following a 1999 coup that placed Musharraf in power, Sharif returned to his home country on Sunday amidst celebrations among his supporters.
Sharif has said that he would boycott the elections unless Musharraf continued to make concessions, starting with the reinstatement of Supreme Court judges who were dismissed by Musharraf after the emergency was called and the constitution suspended.
