Sudan police have arrested British teacher Gillian Gibbons after she allowed her class to name a teddy bear “Mohammed.” Reports say Sudan officials believe Gibbons allowing the 7-year-old students to name the bear after a prophet is blasphemy and an insult to Islam.
The 54-year-old teacher is being held in Khartoum, Sudan, the African country’s capital. She has been charged with blasphemy, which is reportedly punishable with 40 lashes, up to three months in prison, and a fine.
“The children chose the name because it is very common here,” said a British spokesperson in Khartoum. “This happened in September and the parents did not have a problem with it.”
Gibbons has taught at Unity High School, which calls itself a British International School, since leaving the UK in July. High school director Robert Boulos said Gibbons was arrested on Sunday after several parents of the students complained about the teddy bear’s name.
“This is very sensitive issue. We are worried about her safety,” said Boulos. “This was a completely innocent mistake. Miss Gibbons would have never wanted to insult Islam.”
