Hope for finding the remaining 46 South Korean sailors still missing after an explosion on their ship has begun to fade despite continued efforts by search crews and military divers.
The sailors had been aboard a naval patrol vessel near the maritime border with North Korea when an explosion on their boat quickly resulted in the vessel taking on water and sinking the vessel. Rescue crews managed to save 58 sailors as the ship was going down but the remaining 46 have not been seen.
Initial reports included speculation that the South Korean ship had been struck by a torpedo fired by North Korea but those accusations have been denied by both sides.
According to the ship’s captain a loud explosion caused the ship to keel to the right and without power or communication there was little that could be done to save the ship.
