While Iyad Allawi’s bloc narrowly won Iraq’s recent parliamentary election the leader has said he is willing to work with all parties to form a coalition government.
The Iraqiya bloc captured two more seats than Prime Minister Nouri Maliki’s State of Law alliance and despite Allawi’s pledge to work with Maliki the PM has said he would challenge the results of the March 7 elections.
Maliki’s results challenge would go through the country’s courts and has sparked fears of violence and further instability in the government yet he has insisted on a recount. That violence was realized on Friday just hours before the elections results were announced as twin bombings at a restaurant in the town of Khalis killed 52 people.
When the results were announced Allawi’s bloc had picked up 91 of the 325 seats in the Council of Representatives, far short of the 163 needed for a majority. While Allawi lacked a majority his two-seat advantage over Maliki gives him first opportunity to form a coalition government.
Allawi will now have 30 days to form that coalition but if he fails to do so Iraq’s president will ask a leader from another bloc to try and form a coalition.
Allawi wasted little time in extending an invitation to Maliki, telling a news conference “The Iraqi people have blessed the Iraqiya bloc by choosing it. We are open to all powers starting with the State of Law bloc of brother Prime Minister Nouri Maliki.”
