Ukraine Mine Disaster Elevates Death Toll to 100 Miners

The explosion at the Zasyadko mine in eastern Ukraine on Nov. 18 has now been blamed for the deaths of 100 miners after officials declared 11 missing men as dead on Monday.

Rescue workers have been searching for several miners who were reported missing after the blast but fires continue to burn deep into the mine, making search efforts nearly impossible.

Descending 3,300 feet, the mine poses extreme danger as the concentration of methane builds the deeper the mine. It is believed that the explosion was caused by defective electrical equipment used by the miners.
