A couple have been arrested in the death of a 2-year-old girl who Galveston officials nicknamed Baby Grace when they could not ID the girl. The body of the girl was stuffed in a plastic storage container and found when it washed ashore in Galveston Bay.
Authorities believe Baby Grace is Riley Ann Sawyers of Cleveland, Ohio. The child’s mother, 19-year-old Kimberly Dawn Trenor, and her husband, 24-year-old Royce Clyde Zeigler II, have been arrested and charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence. Officials are still awaiting DNA results to confirm the girl is Riley.
Authorities were first alerted that the girl could be Riley by her grandmother, Sheryl Sawyers. Sheryl called Texas authorities after seeing the sketch of Baby Grace that was released in a bid to identify the girl. Sheryl said her son was battling for custody of Riley when Trenor moved to Texas with her new husband.
“There is still a lot of work to do. We still don’t know the full details of what happened,” said Galveston County sheriff’s Major Ray Tuttoilmondo. A cause of death has not been determined although Baby Grace did have three skull fractures.
Trenor and Zeigler are being held on $350,000 bail each.
