Claims that the police left the two teens to die ignited the riots, with the youths hurling stones and firebombs at police. That quickly elevated to rioters carrying more conventional weapons, leaving police open for assault.
At least 77 officers have been injured in the riots.
Speaking on RTL radio, national secretary of the Synergie officers union Patrice Ribeiro warned that the violence could soon take on an elevated level, “Our colleagues will not allow themselves to be fired upon indefinitely without responding. They will be placed in situations which will become untenable.”
Rioters have also targeted local businesses and vehicles in the street. Fires have torched several buildings while cars have been set ablaze.
