Chinese rescue crews are searching for as many as 123 coal miners who remain trapped deep underground after a pit they were working in flooded in Shanxi province.
According to reports about 140 miners were able to escape as the water came rushing in but nearly half the 261 people inside the mine did not have an opportunity to exit.
Earlier this month rescue efforts for 31 trapped miners in Inner Mongolia were abandoned after no signs of life were found following a two-week search.
China’s mines are the deadliest in the world with thousands killed each year in accidents that could typically be avoided if safety rules were followed.
