Dr. Robert Cade, Inventor of Gatorade, Dies at 80

The inventor of the popular sports drink Gatorade, Dr. Robert Cade, died on Tuesday at the age of 80.

According to football lore, Cade and a few of his colleges developed Gatorade in 1965 in an attempt to help the University of Florida football team replenish their body of lost carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Originally designed to restore Florida Gators football players back to peak shape performance, Gatorade eventually became a staple on every sideline, dugout and bench in sports.

Cade was a professor at the University of Florida where he taught medicine. He retired in 2004.
