British officials are working to free Gibbons before she is charged with blasphemy, which is punishable with 40 lashes and 6 months in prison. She could face more serious charges if a witness provides more information.
Gibbons has not received any food, but British consular officials were allowed to leave her water and a bag of chicken kebabs. “Questioning started yesterday and is continuing,” said Ministry of Justice prosecutor Salaheddin Abu Zaid. “We are also questioning witnesses and, if they bring new elements to light, the charges could be more serious.”
