Suicide Bombers Target Moscow Subway System, at least 38 Killed

Two female suicide bombers detonated separate explosives targeting Moscow’s subway system, killing at least 38 people and injuring several more.

According to reports the initial bombing took place at the central Lubyanka station, just beneath the offices of the Federal Security Service (FSB) intelligence agency. Less than an hour later a second bomb tore through a train at Park Kultury.

While there have been no claims of responsibility for the suicide attacks the FSB has already pointed to Islamist rebels fighting for independence in Chechnya, an accusation that FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov has relayed to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

The attack on Moscow’s subway system comes less than two months after Chechen rebel leader Doki Umarov warned Russia that military operations would be extended into the cities.
